November 2019 – In October, a new water fountain was installed at Ottawa Christian School. While this may sound ordinary, this is no ordinary fountain. It features a touch-less activation bottle filler that allows students to quickly and easily refill their water bottles with fresh, filtered water. An auto shut-off feature and advanced drain system means there’s little waste and no standing water. And, with each bottle that’s filled, the number of plastic water bottles saved is shown on an LED display. During its first week of use alone, the fountain served the equivalent of 650 plastic water bottles of water. This not only reduces the number of plastic bottles sent to landfill sites, but also promotes healthy living by encouraging students to drink more water.
“This new fountain is amazing,” said Kiera, a grade 4 student at OCS. “The water tastes great and my water bottle fills up fast.”
The fountain was purchased with proceeds from the OCS Vendor’s Markets. Spearheaded by the Market Fundraising Committee, the markets take place in the spring and fall, allowing vendors to sell everything from crafts to essential oils and eco-friendly cleaning supplies. The markets also include a bake sale that features breads, cookies, Christmas treats, and more.
The goal of the Committee is to eventually replace the other three fountains at the school with these new and improved models. The next Vendor’s Market takes place on November 9 from 10 am to 3 pm. We encourage you to come, and to check out the new water fountain while you’re there.
