Each year, Ottawa Christian School has a school theme and from that theme are monthly chapel themes. The school theme is “Our God is Greater Than…” and October’s theme is poverty.
In chapel, we discussed this year’s theme, Our God is bigger than…, with the monthly focus of poverty. The work of The Ottawa mission was highlighted as a source of help for those who find themselves in a state of poverty.
Established in 1906, The Ottawa Mission’s desire is to help those who do not have the resources to help themselves. With 256 beds, the mission helps men and women by providing food, clothing and shelter, the very basics of life. Ottawa Christian School has supported The Ottawa Mission for more than 30 years.
Those who are helped by The Mission are in a tough place known as poverty. Josh in grade 4 describes poverty as, “when people do not have enough money for food, clothes, or a house.” The Meriam-Webster dictionary describes poverty as, “the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions.” However we state it, poverty leaves us in a place of need.
The students learned that poverty is often due to job loss, family challenges or divorce. Those who find themselves in hard situations need our compassion. Sophia in grade seven said it well—“Can you imagine how hard it would be to not have enough food?”
Once again, OCS will be working to help the mission meet some of the clothing and personal care needs of those they serve. We’ll be collecting winter scarves, hats, mitts, socks and gently used clothing. Toiletries in travel size containers such as deodorant, soap, shaving cream, toothbrushes and toothpaste are always needed. Cash donations are appreciated and can be placed in the money drop box at the office. Items can be brought to school from Oct. 3 to Nov. 1. Grade 6 students will be delivering the collected items to The Ottawa Mission mid November.
By supporting The Ottawa Mission, the OCS community continues to learn to share the love of Jesus.
Our God is greater than…poverty!
