Ottawa Christian School staff members can articulate a personal faith in Jesus Christ and have a provincial teaching certificate or equivalent. All teachers are required to have the Christian School Teacher’s Certificate or be working towards it. All staff who are members of the Ontario College of Teachers are teachers in good standing.
Learning Support Staff
Mr. Triemstra is our Principal at Ottawa Christian School. He enjoys watching children mature in faith and knowledge and working with an excellent group of Christian Educators. He is passionate about sharing what Christian Education is about.
Mr. Triemstra has been our Principal since 2002. He has taught grades 5-12, and has been working at OCS since 1991. He is also a graduate of Ottawa Christian School.

Mrs. Naftel is our Learning Resource teacher and is also the Vice-Principal. She is passionate about helping students reach their full potential. She desires to encourage and teach the necessary skills to continue the race set before her students, regardless of the obstacles that may be found on their paths.
As the point person for Curriculum, she accesses and oversees the curriculum of the school to ensure that we are meeting or exceeding the Ontario Ministry of Education Standards.
Mrs. Naftel began her teaching career at OCS in 1992 and returned in 2011 after taking a decade to be with her children and run a home daycare business.
Certification: Special Education Specialist (2017), Ontario Teachers Certificate (2012), Christian School Teachers Certificate (1992), and BA in English (1992).
Mr. Stassen is our grade 7 teacher. He enjoys making connections with his students. He works on finding ways to show his students that they are unique children of God.
Mr. Stassen is also a Vice Principal at OCS. He has a passion for restorative practices and helps create and foster a restorative culture at the school.
Mr. Stassen is also the computer coordinator. He handles the technical side of the network, and makes sure the computers are functioning to maximize their use by teachers and students.
Mr. Stassen has taught at Ottawa Christian School since 1997. He has experience in grades 4-8.

As Advancement Coordinator, Mrs. Dawson represents OCS with the purpose of increasing enrollment, increasing awareness of OCS, and identifying potential sources of new students.
Mrs. Dawson has been working in the marketing field since she was 11 years old helping to promote the family business, Storyland, in the Ottawa Valley. Previous experience includes Marketing Director at a resort, Marketing Coordinator at CAA Toronto, Events Manager at The Financial Post and varied positions in public relations, media sales and event planning. She is excited for what the Lord has planned for the school, the parents, the children, the staff, the supporters, the churches, and the Christian and non-Christian communities in the Ottawa area.
Mrs. Dods is the bookkeeper at Ottawa Christian School. She is excited to have the opportunity to be used of the Lord in her new role and to be a part of the school community.
Mrs. Dods was born and raised in the US but has called the Manotick area home now for close to 40 years. She has over 30 years of administrative and bookkeeping experience in a small business capacity and puts her strengths to use at OCS.
Mrs. Hunter is our Office Administrator and manages the front office. She keeps our day-to-day things running smoothly! She has many years of Administrative experience, and although she’s so thankful she was able to be home with her kids during their little years, she’s thankful to be able to be back in an office and serving the families of OCS.
Mrs. Hunter is a parent of two OCS students and loves interacting with the children on a daily basis.
Mrs. Hoekema is the part time office assistant. She enjoys helping Mrs. Hunter with the day to day tasks that help make OCS a great school.
She is a parent of three OCS students and has a strong desire to see all kids grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Mr. Darch is the custodian at Ottawa Christian School. He enjoys taking care of the school and making repairs so the facility is always looking and functioning at it’s best.
Mr. Darch has two children attending the school and enjoys the curiosity of all the children as they wonder what Mr. D’s fixing today.

Mrs. Fournier is our Director of Music for students in Grades 1 – 8. She joined the OCS Staff in the fall of 2009.
Mrs. Fournier has taught music programs in various parts of Canada, as well as Alaska. She has developed and implemented music programs overseas in The Netherlands at the International School in Brunssum and also in Geilenkirchen, Germany.
Mrs. Fournier is pleased to be a part of the OCS community. She believes it is a privilege to guide the development of students’ musical abilities and to nurture their God given talents in this area of the curriculum.
Certification: Saskatchewan Teacher’s Certificate (1977), Bachelor of Teaching with a Music Specialty (1977), New Brunswick Letter of Standing (1979). She is working toward the completion of her CSTC.
Madame Speirs is our grade 6 homeroom teacher and senior French teacher. She loves teaching French using the very effective Intensive French Program. She is amazed to see how easily students grow in confidence speaking French with this amazing neurolinguistic approach.
Madame Speirs homeschooled her 4 children for 11 years, started her career as a supply teacher for 2 years in Gatineau, and has been teaching at OCS since 2004. She is currently teaching the Intensive French Program to grade 6 which started September 2010.
Certification: Bachelor of Education / Université du Quebec dans l’Outaouais (1992), B.ED, working towards her Christian Teacher’s Certificate.
Mrs. Nickerson is the Junior/Intermediate Art Teacher at OCS. She has previously taught art lessons privately and with Homeschool co-ops for over 20yrs specializing in drawing and oil painting. She believes every person has been given the gift and innate language of creativity by God and looks forward to helping each student explore and develop skill with various artistic mediums, styles and techniques.
Mrs. Nickerson was first a Child and Youth Worker in an inner-city school setting before studying to become a teacher. She has homeschooled her 7 children and has been a supply teacher and an EA at OCS for the last 4 years.

Mr. McGregor is teaching the grade 4 class as well as physical education to grades 2-8. As a member of the National Track and Field team since 1995, he has learned about goal setting, training, sportsmanship, and team work and is passionate about passing this knowledge onto his students.
Mr. McGregor has taught at Ottawa Christian School since 2004. He has experience teaching homeroom in the junior grades and physical education in the junior and senior divisions. In addition, Mr. McGregor is the head coach for Grade 5,6 Boys Soccer, Cross-Country Running, Relays, Track and Field, convenor of the OISAA Relay meet, and convenor of the OCS Track Meet, and the Regional Field Day Meet.
Mr. McGregor is the athletic coach to 3 high level hockey teams in the city, and personal fitness coach to several athletes within the city.

Mrs. MacFie is a certified teacher librarian with 20 years of experience operating, renovating and designing libraries. Her passion is to pass on her love of quality books to students through author visits, new book displays, book readings, book fairs and book clubs in collaboration with parent volunteers. Her reward is to see the excited faces of children when they visit the library.
Mrs. MacFie has two grown children, both of whom attended Ottawa Christian School and is married to Jim.
Mrs. Buisman is our Junior Kindergarten teacher.
With her art and musical background, she enjoys providing opportunities for her students to creatively express themselves. She considers it a joy working with her Junior Kindergarten students, who show much enthusiasm, curiosity and delight while learning.
Mrs. Buisman has been a teacher at OCS since 2003, with 5 years teaching experience prior to Ottawa Christian School. While living in Halifax, she taught music classes to young children at the Canadian Conservatory of Music.

Mrs. Vedder is our Senior Kindergarten teacher. She is excited about encouraging a sense of wonder in her students as they discover God’s amazing world. Mrs. Vedder puts a strong focus on preparing her students for grade one in a fun and enriching environment.
Mrs. Vedder has experience teaching homerooms in both the primary and junior divisions. She has been teaching at Ottawa Christian School since 2002. She is also a graduate of Ottawa Christian School.

Mrs. Manouchehri teaches the JK/SK integrated class and the Extended Kindergarten Program; she is excited about providing enrichment opportunities in a play-based environment for her students. Mrs. Manouchehri particularly enjoys teaching her students French and has fun implementing a variety of teaching methods to assist the children in their second language learning.
Mrs. Manouchehri loves teaching and has been working with children and youth all of her adult life, teaching in Christian schools in British Columbia, being involved in the homeschooling community in Ottawa, and working in children’s ministries in the church setting for many years. She has been at OCS since 2011.

Mrs. de Haan is one of our Grade 1 teachers. She is excited to lead her students through the adventures of Grade 1. It is her prayer that each child grows to show God’s love in His world as they discover the awe and wonder of His creation. Mrs. de Haan encourages her students to do their work to the best of their abilities as well as encouraging those around them as we learn.
Mrs. de Haan has been teaching at the primary level at OCS since 2002, taking a one year leave to work with teacher trainers in the Gambia, West Africa.

Mrs. Vriend teaches grade 1 and 4. She is honoured to be teaching in a learning environment that encourages spiritual growth alongside academic. She firmly believes that God has created each child unique with a wonderfully designed purpose. It is her joy to support students’ individual needs and challenge them to realize new goals.
This is Mrs. Vriend’s third year as a homeroom teacher at OCS. She has taught in various positions within the school and has greatly enjoyed getting to know the OCS community.

Mrs. Reid is our grade 2 teacher. She enjoys helping each student to discover and develop their God given gifts and talents. Mrs. Reid has a strong interest in developing curriculum to meet each student’s individual needs, with a focus on enrichment activities and outdoor learning. She also enjoys encouraging her students to worship God through music and praise dance.
This is Mrs. Reid’s sixth year at OCS. She has taught at the Renfrew & District Christian School since 2003, with experience teaching grades 1 through 8.

Mr. Fleming is our grade 3 teacher. He is excited to be part of the Ottawa Christian School community and looks forward to all that God has planned for him and his students. He is passionate about being a positive role model as a teacher and in his community. Mr. Fleming continuously seeks to inspire and motivate others to reach their God-given potential in all that they do.

Mme Lafontaine is the grade 5 teacher and teaches the girls health classes. She also teaches French to the grade 3 students. She enjoys helping her students grow in their abilities and their enjoyment of French.
Mme Lafontaine has been teaching at Ottawa Christian School since 2015. She has experience teaching Kindergarten to grade 7, in both English and French Immersion setting.

Mr. Gilhuis is the new grade 6b teacher at OCS. He is extremely blessed to be in a school that focuses on the Christian ethos alongside the academic. He believes that this provides the students with a well rounded holistic approach to growth. Although Mr. Gilhuis is starting at OCS this year, this will be his sixth year as a classroom teacher. Mr. GIlhuis and his family have spent the past five years teaching in private international schools in both South Korea and the Philippines. They were lucky enough to also be able to travel throughout Asia, and participate in some mission work while there.

Mrs. Schenk is excited to be back at OCS. As a previous student herself, many years ago, and a school parent/board member more recently, she has been involved in the school community for many a year.
Mrs. Schenk comes to us from Redeemer High School, where she taught a number of different courses, including English, History and French. Last year, she thoroughly enjoyed helping some individual students here at OCS, as an Educational Assistant. This year, as she continues this role, she also looks forward to taking on some new teaching responsibilities as well, including the grade 7 Language Arts class. She is equally excited to come full circle to teach the SK French class, as she began her career many years ago teaching French to the students at Community Christian School.
Certification: Ontario Teacher’s Certificate 2012, BA from Redeemer University in History with minors in English and French (1988), B. Ed from Calvin College (1989).
Ms. Mills is the grade 8 teacher and thankful to join a wonderful team to serve the students and families of OCS in a faith based learning environment. As a recent graduate of the University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Education, she has had a variety of experiences in the primary and junior divisions with various school boards in the Ottawa region.

Mrs. Boucher, a trained Educational Assistant, has worked with many students in this position at Ottawa Christian School. She loves helping students achieve success by finding out what learning strategies work for them. She enjoys working in the small group setting where there is freedom to work at the student’s pace.
Mrs. Boucher has helped within classrooms and in the Resource Room for over 20 years. She has been working at OCS since 2000.
Certification: Certified Barton Reading/Spelling Tutor (2007), Hanen Early Language Program (1980), Sign Language 1 and 2 (1978), B. of Child Studies (1975).
Mrs. Courteau, is a qualified Child & Youth Worker, has worked as an Educational Assistant at both the Public and Catholic School Boards, and has extensive training in children’s ministry in various church settings.
She is passionate about working with children and helping them develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Currently in her sixth year at OCS, Mrs. Courteau is honoured to be a part of such an amazing team.

Mrs Schievink ( Mrs S ) is an Educational assistant in the grade two class. She has her diploma in Early Childhood Education. She has enjoyed working with children with special needs for many years in several schools and community placements.
Mrs. S believes all children learn differently and enjoys working with children on a one to one basis. She is passionate about Christian Education and loves to watch children develop a relationship with Jesus and apply their Christianity into all areas of education and life. Mrs S. also has three children enrolled at OCS and lives in Kanata with her family.
Early Childhood Education (2000)
Mrs. Fayer is an educational therapist who has worked in private practice since 2013, and began working at Ottawa Christian School in 2015.
At OCS she works as an NILD therapist, Search and Teach provider and as a literacy specialist. She is passionate about helping kids learn, developing their strengths and improving their weaknesses.
Certification: NILD Certified Educational Therapist – Levels I, II & III (2013-2016), Search and Teach (2015), Post-Graduate Certificate of Education (1999), Bachelor of Arts (1997).
Miss Boucher (Miss Chris) is a graduate from the Child and Youth Worker program through Algonquin College. Miss Chris, as she is affectionately known, is very experienced working with children and their families with a diversity of needs as an EA in the public school board and also as a Child and Youth Worker through Crossroads Children Centre.
Miss Chris’ passion is working with students to promote self-regulation skills through strength based practice.
